Sainsburys pet insurance which is underwritten by AXA insurance that also insures John Lewis and Pet Guard and several other pet insurance companies.

When I phoned the Sainsburys, the lady on the phone was very helpful and answered my questions in a friendly manner.

Sainsbury’s also offers travel, car, home and life insurance.

Sainsburys pet insurance offers 2 plans that are both ‘per condition’ plans.

Sainsbury pet insurance also offer a line to help you find a pet friendly hotel.

Vet fees- Illness or Accidents are covered by Sainsbury pet insurance
Routine/Preventative care- vaccinations, annual exam, spay/neuter, heartworm testing and meds, teeth cleaning, tick and flea meds. None of these are covered by Sainsburys pet insurance
Hereditary conditions- are covered with Sainsburys pet insurance.
Hip Dysplasia- are covered.
Death- Will cover replacement price of pet if dies from injury or illness (under 8 years).
Euthanasia and Cremation – Euthanasia is not covered for either plan. Cremation is only covered for the second more expensive option.
Boarding- If you or a family member living in your household goes to hospital for more than 4 days and no other family member is able to look after your pet.
Holiday- is not covered for the cheaper plan and is covered for upto 3000 for the second plan.
Cover abroad- also covered in option 2 is: 250 for loss of health certificate, repeat tick and worm treatment, 500 for emergency expenses abroad.
Quarantine Costs- are only covered for the more expensive plan upto 2000 per trip.
Behavioural problems- are covered for the second plan upto 250.
Prescription Meds- are not covered for either of Sainsburys pet insurance plans.
Dental- is covered if it is due to an accident or illness and your pet had its teeth checked 12 months prior and followed the recommendations of the vet.
Alternative treatment- ( acupuncture, massage…)- is only covered for the second plan upto 1000 per condition.
Breeding, Fertility, Pregnancy– is not covered by Sainsburys pet insurance.
Medical devices– are covered for both Sainsbury pet insurance plans.
Lost/Stolen Pet  (Advertising to find pet if lost/stolen/strays) – is covered for both plans upto 1000.
Third party liability(dogs only) – is covered upto 1million for the cheaper plan and upto 2 million for more expensive Sainsbury pet insurance plan.
Accidental Damage– there is a 500 coverage for the more expensive plan, and no coverage for the cheaper plan.
Grooming and Bathing– these are not covered by Sainsburys pet Insurance.
Pet food, Nutritional supplements, vitamins, natural remedies– these are not covered with the cheaper Sainsbury pet insurance plan. They are covered for 200/ condition for a clinical diet.

Some Common Questions: 

Are congenital or Hereditary conditions covered by Sainsburys Pet Insurance?
Yes, these are both covered as long as they’re not pre existing before getting coverage.

Lifetime insurer (will they cover on going conditions throughout pets life) ? 
No. Sainsburys pet insurance has a condition limit. If the condition limit is reached, you no longer get coverage for that condition.

Does Sainsbury Pet Insurance offer any Discounts? 
5% discount for second pet if you insure it with Sainsbury pet insurance aswell.
Additional 5% discount if you pay using your Sainsbury’s Credit Card.

Any vet or specific vets only? After hours vets or in home vets? 
Yes you can go to your regular vet.In an emergency you can go to an afterhours or get a home vet.

Can the vet be paid directly?  
If your vet agrees to this, then he/she can fill out claims forms so that they can be paid directly.

If not, How quickly are claims processed with Sainsbury pet insurance? 
5 business days.

Does Sainsburys pet insurance cover examination fee (if it relates to the injury or illness) ? 
This depends on what was wrong.

All breeds? 
No: Pets that are an American Pit Bull Terrier, Dogo Argentino, Fila Braziliero, Japanese Tosa, Perro de Presa Canario, Pit Bull, Pit Bull Terrier, Sharpei, wolves or wolf hybrid, or a dog crossed with these, or any animal registered under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 and The Dangerous Dogs (Northern Ireland) order 1991 or Dangerous Dogs (amendment) Act 1997 or any subsequent amendments or a dog crossed with any of these.

The following breeds are also not covered: American Bulldog, American Bullmastiff, American Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Beauceron, Bernese Mountain Dog, Bordeaux Mastiff, Bullmastiff, Cane Corso, Czechoslovakian Wolfdog, Deerhound, Dogue Brasileros, Dogue de Bordeaux, Irish Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Mastiff, Neapolitan Mastiff, Northern Inuit, Pyrenean Mastiff, Sarlooswolfhound, Spanish Mastiff, Tibetan Mastiff, Tosa Inus, Utonagan

Dangerous Dog Act? 
Dogs under the dangerous dog act are not covered by Sainsbury pet insurance plans.

Do I stop getting coverage as my dog ages? 
No upper age limits. Your pet will continue to get coverage throughout its life with Sainsburys pet insurance plans.

Does age affect monthly price (as my dog gets older will the monthly premium go up) ?  
The monthly price increases every year, but Sainsbury pet insurance wouldn’t say by how much.

Does Sainsbury pet insurance put the monthly price up every year? By how much? 
The monthly price increases every year, but they couldn’t say by how much.

Does Sainsbury pet insurance serve all of the UK? Is the monthly amount more depending on where I live? 
They serve all of the UK and it is the same price everywhere in the UK.

If your vet charges higher than the fees usually charged. They may request a second opinion from an independent vet. If the independent vet does not agree with the veterinary fees charged they may decide to pay only the veterinary fees usually charged by a general or referral practice in a similar area

What they don’t cover – claims that are directly or indirectly related to:
• Pets under 8 weeks old.
• Pre-existing conditions.
• No coverage for injuries that result from: racing, breeding, guarding, Or if your pet is used in conjunction for business or occupation.
• Treatment not recommended by a vet.
• Illnesses or Accidents that happen outside of UK, Northern Ireland, Isle of Man, channel islands, Eire, or the EU countries of the PETS travel scheme defined by DEFRA.
• Will not insure dogs that are a breed under the “Dangerous Dogs act 1991 or Dangerous dogs act 1991(Northern Ireland)”
o These dogs include: Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and pets described similar in type and characteristic. They may not even be of this breed, but if they’re described to be the same.
o This is described as a type and characteristic, NOT breed, meaning any dogs that have characteristics as the above breeds.
